Branding Through a Box of Crayons

Career Day Business Cards from John Marshall Elementary Students

Who says children shouldn’t be put to work? Career Day at John Marshall Elementary says otherwise.

My schedule looked a little different Thursday, May 27th as I took a break from the day-to-day grind and chose instead to utilize the mini-minds of Edison Township. Child rights lawyers relax. These little workers wanted to help, we swear!

Growing up can be a grueling time. Hopefully we haven’t gotten too old not to remember the drama of the playground, the anxiety of where to sit at lunch, or even doing homework! But much has changed since we’ve been in the hot seat (with the desk attached). No longer are the kids worried about what they want to be when they grow up. Oh no, they’ve got that figured out, no problem. Now their only dilemma is how these keen kids are going to promote themselves and their talents.

That’s where Verge 180 comes in with the solution.

However, it was harder than you would think to convince these astute third-graders that they need some tools to publicize their capabilities. So I gave them the pitch. Verge 180 is a marketing company that uses creative communications to … blah blah blah. They weren’t buying it. Fine. Hot on my feet, I had to do something before the little natives lost interest.

Scrambling, I handed out:

1. Paper. Easy enough.

2. Crayons. Did you know there are now 150 different colors?

3. A couple examples.

And told the young entrepreneurs to create their own business cards.

Here’s the awesome work they produced:
